Take the Leap
“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.”
II Timothy 1:7
You should've seen those students. Some of them were excited, but most of them were terrified. They were standing on top of a forty-foot cliff overlooking Dog Lake in Canada (which, by the way, doesn’t sound nearly as intimidating as it looks when you are peeking over the edge). They wanted to jump in, but timidity had gotten the best of some of them.
The first few jumped and surfaced with huge smiles on their faces and exclamations of excitement. Quickly they climbed to the top of the rock to experience the rush again. The next few took a little bit of time before they convinced themselves to jump, but were glad they did.
The last third of the group struggled. They wanted to jump. They wanted to experience the thrill that the other students could not stop raving about, but their fear had their feet glued to the rock. Although the others were encouraging them to take a chance, they couldn’t overcome their own inhibitions. Every so often one would take steps toward the edge, but abort his attempt at the last minute. This just added to the frustration. They were caught in an emotional trap as their fear and embarrassment clouded their minds.
Even though they were terrified to take the leap, each one eventually did. And even the most timid was so thrilled with the experience that they did it repeatedly after they overcame their initial inhibitions.
I have discovered that there are things in life, which seem scary at first, but bring great joy afterwards. Actually, as I have journeyed with Christ, many of the things that He has asked me to do have brought fear, or at least amplified uncertainty. Talking with someone about my faith is never easy. But just like those students, after I overcame my fears, I couldn’t wait to do it again. Stepping out of my comfort zone to serve in another country felt the same way: fear and questions at first, but enjoyment and a sense of accomplishment afterwards.
As you walk with Christ, there will be times when you are confronted with cliffs that seem scary. As you peer over the edge, you will have internal and external voices trying to convince you to stay on the ground. But the voice of the Holy Spirit inside of you will be encouraging you to trust Him and jump into the opportunities. In those moments, you will have a choice to make.
Will you play it safe, or will you go airborne?
If you want to enjoy life to its fullest and embrace faith that is both fulfilling and thrilling, take the leap. In the face of questions, be strong and courageous. When trials come, be bold. When opportunities rise in front of you, trust God and jump. Because when you are following Christ, you will never be disappointed.
What’s waiting over that edge?
Do you hold back? Do you wait for someone else to lead? What makes you timid? Isn’t it time that you took the leap?
Is God speaking to you about someone or something? What is it that He wants you to do? What is holding you back? Be bold and act on what you sense you are supposed to do.
